Northern Norwich Scout District holds a biannual awards ceremony celebrating those who have achieved the top awards in each section across the district, inviting parents and leaders along to join in the celebrations too. Our October Celebration of Scouting Achievements awards evening was as packed as ever with award recipients and their friends, family and leaders too.
Two Young Leaders from Northern Norwich, Fraser Rudd and Paul Ward have, during the last six months, completed their Young Leader Training and been awarded their Young Leader Belt and Buckle.
Young Leaders are 14 to 18 year old Explorer Scouts who, in addition to regularly attending an Explorer Scout Unit, also chose to work with a Beaver, Cub or Scout section. They take part in a Young Leader training scheme which consists of 11 modules of learning which include first aid, programme planning and leadership training. They have to complete 4 missions by providing indoor and outdoor activities, assisting with the delivery of an activity badge or challenge badge and maintaining badge records. Having validated their missions they can be awarded their Young Leader Belt and Buckle.
Fraser originally started his scouting at 1st Drayton where he was a Beaver and Cub. He then went on to attend Scouts at the 1st Taverham Scout Group and is now a member of Nelson Victory Explorer Unit. He has been a Young Leader at the 1st Taverham Cub Pack since November 2012.
Graham Edmunds acting Group Scout Leader at Taverham said “Fraser is very keen and reliable. He is always willing to help and works well with the other leaders. He is naturally quiet but since helping regularly at Cubs his confidence has grown. He now takes an active part in the pack meetings helping to organise games and run activity bases. It is a pleasure and a great help having Fraser at Cubs, he is a great role model and is certainly an adult leader in the making.”
Paul began his Scouting as a Cub Scout at the 3rd & 4th Norwich. He then moved on to the Scout Section where he gained his Chief Scout’s Gold Award. When he turned 14 he joined Explorers as a member of the Aqua Centurions Explorer Unit. After a six month gap Paul became a Young Leader in the Scout Section, where he stayed for three and a half years whilst completing his Young Leader training. Paul also helped with the Cub section when they were short of helpers. He recently turned 18 and has taken out an appointment as a Sectional Assistant in the Cub Section at the 3rd & 4th Norwich.
Group Scout Leader, Simon Mobbs said “Paul has been and still is an asset to the Scout Group, offering his help at all activities including kayaking instruction and helping at bases on the District Water Activities camp. Most recently he was part of the Vikings Sub Camp team at Norjam, the International Scout Jamboree. This involved regularly attending meetings and work days for two years leading up to the event and then working for the week as part of the team which ensured that the 1,000 campers on the Sub Camp had a great experience.”
The District were delighted that one of these young people, Paul Ward was able to receive his award at the District’s “Celebration of Scouting Achievements” evening while Fraser Rudd, who was unable to attend the presentation evening because of another commitment, received his Belt and Buckle the previous week at the 1st Taverham Cub Pack meeting.
Chris Reynolds, Deputy District Commissioner said “The Young Leaders Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals and allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. To achieve the Belt and Buckle these young people have to show a significant commitment to scouting over a long period of time and Northern Norwich District are proud and delighted of their achievements.”
75 young people from Northern Norwich District have gained their Chief Scouts Award in the last 6 months. A total of 37 Bronze, 26 Silver and 12 Gold Award have been achieved and all the award holders received invitations to the Celebration of Scouting Achievements evening held on Friday 17th October at St Catherine’s Church, Aylsham Road, Norwich.
Also recognised were the members of the two District’s teams who took part in the County Shooting Competition in September. The competition was won by the District’s “A” team – Jonathan Jolly, Peter Savory, Alex Slaughter and Will Storey, while the “B” team – James Dearden, Kane Dipple, James Gunn and Ben Smith were runners up. The competition Individual Overall highest scorer was Will Storey.
The teams were awarded trophies and certificates in recognition of their achievement.
