Explorers & Network Members in Derbyshire

It was busy weekend as 13 Explorer Scouts from the HAndS and Nelson Victory Explorer Scout Units were joined by 2 Network members from Mongoose as they headed to Derbyshire for some hillwalking and gorge walking.

Having set off on Friday at around 17:30 and despite torrential rain and traffic hold-ups, we arrived safely at the 1st Taxal Scout Group Headquarters at Whaley Bridge by 23:00.

Despite the terrible forecast that had been predicted during the week, we were pleased when Saturday morning dawned, dry and with a glimmer of brightness in the sky. We set off to the Goyt Valley for a day of walking; some were looking forward to visiting the infamous Cat and Fiddle (not only for the fabulous views, but for the rumoured tasty chips!)  Unfortunately, the Cat and Fiddle was shut ‘until further notice’ – better luck next time Ben!!  After a day walking we were all grateful to return to the HQ for a hot shower and BBQ tea. The evening was spent together before turning in for an early start Sunday.

Sunday, we were on the road by 9:00 as we needed to be in Snake Pass by 10:00.  Once there and kitted out in wetsuits and hard hats, the Explorers and Network members set off to the Gorge. It was a lovely bright sunny day, which was just as well as the water was freezing (apparently).  Three hours later the Explorers had enjoyed testing their nerve by jumping in natural pools, scrambling up waterfalls and enjoying wading through the clear, clean water which filters through the peat bogs of Kinder Scout!  After hurriedly getting dry and warm, it wasn’t long before they were all back on the mini-bus for the return journey to Norfolk.

With a stop off for tea on the way back, we were reunited with families at the 2nd Hellesdon HQ.  I’m sure the Explorers would join me in thanking Ellen and Martin especially, for organising the weekend but also to all Leaders for giving up their weekend to make the trip possible.
